Going over budget in a category happens to everyone, and it does not mean your budget has failed. A budget is a plan, and plans need adjusting as real life unfolds.

Cover the overage from another category

Because every dollar in your budget already has a job, an overage in one category means you need to move money from another. Pull from a flexible category like entertainment or dining out to cover it, so your total income and spending stay in balance.

Decide whether it was a one-time event or a pattern

  • One-time: A surprise expense this month? Cover it and move on.
  • A pattern: If you go over in the same category month after month, the budgeted amount is probably too low. Raise it and trim somewhere else.

Protect your savings and debt payments first

Try to cover overages from discretionary spending rather than from the money you assigned to savings or debt payoff. Those are the categories that move you forward.

Start fresh next month

Do not let one over-budget category convince you the whole plan is broken. Adjust, learn, and begin the next month with a clean slate.

In Wallet1000 you can rebalance your categories at any time so your budget always reflects what actually happened.
